"So Trump wants a ceasefire that’s acceptable not only to the U.S. and Israel but also to Hamas."

Acceptable to Hamas? I have to say anything acceptable to Hamas has Got to be Bad For Israel (and The West).

Thank you for providing clarity. With your truth telling and Al Jazeera propaganda and BBC echoing Al Jazeera talking points, I feel fully informed despite not having a security clearance. Maintaining Israel’s reverse Silk Road (ie the airspace from southern Syria to northern Iraq to Azerbaijan and into northern and western Iran) must be a considerable challenge…but well worth the investment. Thank you for keeping us informed.

Israel may agree to a temporary ceasefire with Hamas, but they should not give up any territory they now control in Gaza. This would only give Hamas the ability to set more booby traps and further exert control over the non-combatants in Gaza.

You are all delusional here, including Michael Oren. A Nobel Peace Prize for a convicted felon and adjudicated rapist? Awarding a man who pardons jailed insurrectionists, gives them badges and guns and tells them to go kidnap people who don't look like them and deny their CONSTITUTIONALLY MANDATED due process? The only thing your lauded real estate guy managed to develop successfully was a concentration camp built on swamp land in Florida. Shall we also talk about how as President he managed to ignite a global trade war with his temper tantrum imposition of "yuge" tariffs on pretty much every country? Let's not forget cruel legislation that will close hospitals, deny people health care, even in emergency situations, take food away from children and their families, shutter years, if not decades, of scientific research into diseases, and on global climate change. We can also talk about his completely shredding this democracy by ignoring court orders from the Supreme Court on down and ruling by Executive Order instead of following the congressional process. In other words completely denying the checks and balances on Presidential power laid out in the Constitution. Also needing to be mentioned is accepting expensive gifts from foreign governments in exchange for access and using the power of his office to enrich himself and his billionaire buddies. Most of this he's done just in the last 6 months since he took office.

Trump is deserving of nothing but a prison cell for the rest of his life.

The Abraham Accords are a charade.

Speculation in growing land values, after the local population density increases, along with improvements to the infrastructure (which are paid with our tax money), is the standard way for people like Trump to become billionaires. They have sufficient ability to borrow the investment money from their friends at the bank, who are sure to subsequently benefit from the land sales after its price has greatly risen. Had the government made these added values fully taxable, there would be much greater social justice and less corruption in the bribery for getting the news of the next proposal for land development. With land no longer so costly (due to less speculation in its rising values), the entrepreneurs would find it easier to establish new business and to reduce the cost of their competitive goods (against past monopolistic action), and to introduce the resulting greater amounts of employment!

You don’t give fascists Nobel peace prizes… particularly a fascist who is accelerating the collapse of civilizations throughout the planet by his promotion of the fossil fuel industry and his denial of the existential nature of the climate crisis.

If anyone believes that Israel will be secure when it has peace with its neighbors it is in deep denial about the degree to which climate change will make organized and civilized life in Israel all but impossible by mid-century as well as of course most everywhere else.

Michael seems to be quite myopic on that issue

If terrorist Yasser Arafat can get a peace prize, and Obama a prize on spec of what woke committee members believed he would do, anyone can. Not that I think Trump is a fascist, far from it. He loves peace, because peace is good for business. The Abraham Accords are an amazing accomplishment and so is the one-and-done effective end to Iran's plan to obliterate Israel. He actually deserves the prize according to the metrics that guided its creation.

CLIMATE CRISIS!!! We're all going to die. Just like with covid.

Have any of the ignoramuses who rant about CLIMATE CHANGE ever studied climate variation throughout the history of the planet? Or actually read the UN reports rather than the sensationalistic "news" articles and videos? And have they believed every other hoax, about Russia, Russia, Russia, and now "Trump is a fascist"? Do they even have an idea what fascism meant historically?

I guess Bibi must be an ignoramous then as well as he talks about israel’s significant accomplishments addressing the climate crisis in this video.

Do you now agree that Bibi is an ignoramous? I look forward to your response.

The scene of Netanyahu, indicted for "Crimes Against Humanity", drafting a letter recommending Donald Trump, a convicted felon and twice impeached POTUS, for the Nobel Peace Prize is surely a sign of the Apocalypse.

Just for the record, a majority of Americans do not want our blood and treasure expended fighting endless religious wars in the Middle East. Also, Israel's favorability rating is in a death spiral most everywhere. It is time for the "region" to take responsibility for its own "reordering".

And the fate of the Hostages in this analysis?

Expand full comment
David Harold Chester's avatar

The reason why Hamas will not give up all of the hostages, is that it does not want to be completely driven out of Gaza and to lose its political and somewhat limited military control there. All of these fine negotiations between Trump and Bibi will not achieve true peace, because of this political and Iranian supported emphasis on again building up sufficient strength for an even greater battle in Gaza, without any regard being given to its civilian residents. Its not even a religious motivation for Shite world domination any more!

Michael, what is your plan for stopping the radical right from torpedoing any deal which allows for integration of Israel in the region alongside a demilitirized Palestinian state? If you do not support this vision, do you believe that it’s morally or strategically sound to indefinitely govern the Palestinians as an occupation, or as unequal citizens in one state?

The problem is ever since Obama decided to unilaterally do a complete 180 on the American middle east policy the Democratic Party has proven it will upend and reverse any policy that doesn't fit its ideological conceptions. Especially so if that policy is implemented by their arch nemesis Trump. So how can Israel the Saudis or anyone else rely on what may be temporary arrangements.

Correct, and that is why the U.S. has no business getting involved in "reordering" the Middle East. We have no dog in this fight, and Israel needs to find local partners to achieve a lasting peace goal.

Doug Israel's avatar

I 100 percent disagree that we "have no dog in this fight." Our interests are very much involved. What we need is an agreement and general consensus on what our overall policy will be. Before Obama it was clear. Isolate Iran and provide diplomatic and military support for Israel to defend itself against its many enemies. Now its totally unclear.

John Hardman's avatar

My point exactly. Let Israel and the Saudis come to an agreement and put your own house in order. Other than the price of gas at the pump, the average American couldn’t give a damn. Notice that neither the U.S. nor the EU is interested in cleaning up this mess. What’s ’Plan B’?

Doug Israel's avatar

The US and Europe have been interfering for decades in case you haven't noticed. The international community is more involved in stopping Israel from securing itself than any other thing on earth. No one is asking the US to intervene specifically. That doesn't mean we dont have an interest in supporting a Democratic ally to bring stability and security to a very important part of the world. Whether the average American cares or not is irrelevant. What matters is America's interests. Policy is not made by popular opinion. Fortunately.

Fracking and renewables have changed the equation for the region and the West no longer has reasons to “interfere”. Most of the oil now goes to Asia, not the West. As the wise old Jew, Einstein” said, “Repeating the same action and expecting different results is the definition of insanity.”
